Cortisol and Mental Health. How stress affects your brain and how to fight it?

Kobieta zmagająca się z przewlekłym stresem.

Stress has become an integral part of modern life. Too frequent or chronic stressful situations can lead to elevated levels of cortisol, the stress hormone, which has a huge impact on our mental health. In this article, we will look at how stress and cortisol affect our brain, and also how we can naturally support our psyche in the fight against stress, including through the use of adaptogens.

What is cortisol and how does it affect our body?

Cortisol, known as the "stress hormone", is secreted by the adrenal glands in response to stressful situations. Its main role is to mobilize the body for a quick reaction - it increases blood glucose levels, raises blood pressure, and also suppresses inflammatory reactions. Although in the short term this can be beneficial for the body, chronically elevated cortisol levels have a number of negative health effects.

Elevated cortisol affects our ability to concentrate, memory, and emotional functioning. This is particularly dangerous in the context of mental health, as it can lead to problems such as anxiety, depression, and sleep disorders.

How does chronic stress affect our brain?

Long-term stress and elevated cortisol levels have a direct impact on brain structures responsible for emotions and memory. One of the areas particularly sensitive to cortisol is the hippocampus, which plays a key role in the processes of remembering and learning.

Increased cortisol levels can lead to the destruction of hippocampus cells, resulting in problems with concentration and memory. In addition, chronic stress negatively affects the functioning of the frontal part of the brain, i.e. the prefrontal cortex, which is responsible for decision-making, planning, and impulse control. As a result, people exposed to long-term stress may experience difficulties in making decisions and solving problems.

Emotional disorders associated with chronic stress

High cortisol levels can also negatively affect our emotional balance. Too much stress hormone makes us more susceptible to mood swings, anxieties, and depressive states. This can lead to chronic stress, which results in anxiety, insomnia, and a feeling of uneasiness. In extreme cases, it can also cause mental disorders, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or chronic depression.

Chronic stress also increases the level of neurotransmitters, such as dopamine, which affect our sense of happiness and satisfaction. The higher the cortisol level, the more we lose the ability to feel joy from everyday activities, which leads to negative consequences for mental health.

Adaptogens – natural helpers in the fight against stress

Adaptogens are plants that help the body adapt to stress, supporting hormonal balance and nervous system functions. Here are some of the most effective ones:

Ashwagandha – is one of the most known and effective adaptogens, which particularly stands out in the fight against stress. Known for its calming action, it effectively reduces the level of cortisol, the stress hormone, which in excess can lead to emotional disorders, sleep problems and weakened immunity. It affects many aspects of mental health, helping to reduce anxiety and improve mood. What's more, it supports concentration and memory, which makes it an excellent support for people who experience difficulties with concentration as a result of stress.

Liquid extracts of Ashwagandha, such as those offered by Ollywell, are a convenient and fast form of taking this plant. Thanks to the liquid form, these extracts are characterized by higher bioavailability, which means faster and more effective absorption of active ingredients. Regular use of Ashwagandha helps in restoring hormonal balance, reducing stress and improving well-being.
